Skin Abnormality Descriptions
Skin tags are small protruding bits of skin that often grow in the groin area, armpits, neck and eyelids.
Skin lesions are surface growths or patches of the skin that don’t resemble the skin around it. Skin lesions can be grouped into primary or secondary lesions.
Primary lesions are variations in colour or texture and often present at birth. These include moles or birthmarks. They also include those that develop as a result of infectious diseases such as warts, acne or psoriasis, allergic reactions such as hives or dermatitis, or environmental factors such as sunburn.
Secondary lesions are those changes in the skin that result from primary lesions, either as a natural progression or from scratching or picking.
Cysts are sacks filled with fluid or semi-fluid material. Cysts develop in various places in the body and arise from different tissues in the body.
Moles are growths on the skin that are usually brown or black. Moles can appear anywhere on the skin, alone or in groups. Moles usually appear in childhood but can also appear later in life. It is perfectly normal to have between 10-40 moles by adulthood. As the years pass, moles usually change slowly, becoming raised and/or changing colour. Often hairs develop.
