Skin photorejuvenation enhances the skin’s natural appearance, leaving it looking younger and fresher.
While there are a number of available ablative treatments such as skin peels, dermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing , skin photorejuvenation (known also as subsurface resurfacing, non-ablative laser skin rejuvenation, and laser toning) has gained immense popularity in recent years. And this is because it requires little to no healing time.

Skin photorejuvenation works by bypassing the surface of the skin and treating the layers underneath, known as the papillary dermis. This allows the skin to regenerate, responding as if it was repairing a wound. Unlike in ablative skin resurfacing, with this technique, the epidermis is generally not removed.
Because this treatment is less intense than ablative treatments, skin photorejuvenation poses minimal downtime and recovery. However, it requires multiple sessions, and may take several weeks after the last session for the optimal results of treatment to be seen.
Who is a good candidate for skin photorejuvenation and what are the benefits?
Good candidates for skin photorejuvenation are:
- People with Fitzpatrick skin type I to V. It is not suitable for Fitzpatrick VI. (Our laser practitioner will determine your Fitzpatrick skin type at your initial consultation. A test patch may be administered at this stage if deemed appropriate).
- People who suffer from rosacea and experience flushing and redness of their skin.
- People with early aging changes (fine lines and wrinkles, large pores and sun damage) who desire healthier more youthful-looking skin.
- People who don’t want to take the time off to heal from laser skin resurfacing or skin peels.

The Skin Photorejuvenation Treatment
Protective eyewear is worn to guard the eyes from the laser light. During the treatment, your laser practitioner will use a small hand-piece to apply the laser light to your skin. Levels of energy specific to your treatment are used to maximize your improvement. Once delivered, the light energy is absorbed by the targeted damaged tissue.
A brief discomfort can be felt which is often described as feeling similar to the sensation caused by a snapping rubber band on the skin. Most patients comment that the discomfort they feel during the treatment is minimal, and it is usually relieved within minutes of the procedure’s completion.
The skin photorejuvenation treatments take between 20- 40 minutes. We recommend a course of 4-6 treatments every 4 weeks for maximum results, and a yearly maintenance session thereafter.
How soon will I see the results and how long do the effects last?
Most patients notice changes in the tone and condition of their skin immediately following a skin photorejuvenation treatment. Sunspots will fade; pore sizes will shrink; and fine lines and wrinkles will gradually decrease in size. These improvements will steadily increase with each treatment. Patients with rosacea will see a progressive decrease in redness with every treatment.
Results can last for a year or longer and vary depending upon how well you take care of your skin. For best results we recommend an initial course of 4-6 treatments every 4 weeks, and a yearly maintenance session thereafter.
Risks & Complications
There are few risks associated with skin photorejuvenation and risk rates vary from patient to patient depending on several factors. Immediately after treatment, most patients notice minimal skin redness, an occasional blister, and mild pinkness or swelling that will disappear within a few hours. As with any laser treatment, sun exposure should be avoided before and after the treatment. Side effects are rare, but include dark spots and light spots, which usually resolve.
However, patients who are prone to outbreaks of herpes at the site of the proposed treatment area, scarring or keloids should inform their laser practitioner. If you are using acne medications such as Accutane® or Retin-A®, your laser practitioner will discuss with you the chance of a negative reaction.
Alternative treatments to Skin Photorejuvenation
Alternatives to Non-ablative Skin Photorejuvenation are Medical Microdermabrasion, Skin Peels and Laser Skin Resurfacing . However, as these are ablative treatments, the downtime will be considerably longer than for the non-ablative skin photorejuvenation.
