According to the most recently published Annual Survey of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, for the third year in a row, women underwent more cosmetic surgery procedures than men in every category of both surgical and non-surgical procedures except for hair transplants.
Age was also significant in surgery selection. Also women under the age of 35 tended to opt for less invasive procedures. However the overall quantity of certain procedures decreased from the previous year.
At 64%, the most frequently requested non-surgical procedures for women under the age of 35 were Botox® injections (as opposed to 65% in the previous year), then hyaluronic acid injections (at 55%), chemical peels (at 24%) and microdermabrasion (at 15%).
Overall the most common surgical procedures performed on women were facelifts, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), rhinoplasty (nose re-shaping), ablative skin resurfacing, and lip augmentation. The most frequently performed non-surgical procedures for women were Botox® and hyaluronic acid injections, and microdermabrasion.
The most frequently performed procedures performed on women between the ages of 35 and 60 were blepharoplasty, Botox® and filler injections, facelifts, brow lifts and chemical peels. However the average number of such procedures showed a decrease of between 1% to 8% from the previous year. Chemical peels decreased by 8% whilst facelifts and browlifts both decreased 6%.
For both men and women under the age of 35, rhinoplasty continues to be the most common surgical procedure. Both men and women aged 22 to 34 underwent the procedure the most of all age groups, with the average number of rhinoplasties increasing by 2% for this age group from the previous year.
Besides rhinoplasty, the most common surgical procedures for men were revision surgeries, blepharoplasties and hair transplants. The most frequently performed non-surgical procedures were Botox®, hyaluronic acid injections, calcium hydroxyapetite treatment and microdermabrasion. For men under the age of 35, otoplasty (ear correction surgery) and chin augmentation were the most performed surgical procedures after rhinoplasty.
